The musical, FUN HOME is the Tony Award-winning work
of Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori. Originating as Alison Bechdel’s graphic novel-as-memoir,
it’s based upon the author’s memories of
coming out as a lesbian.
The
musical’s book revolves around Alison’s relationship with her closeted gay
father, and takes place in his impeccably appointed house, as well as the
funeral home (“fun home”) where he works.
In 2015, this first Broadway musical to
present a lesbian protagonist was nominated for ten Tony Awards, and won five.
Director Len Matheo has cast the show
impeccably.
The
excellent cast includes Susannah McLeod (Alison), Abigail Kochevar (Middle
Alison) and Sophia Dotson (young Alison.)
You can expect
masterful performances from local favorites Heather Lacy (Helen) and Rory
Pierce (Bruce) as Alison's mother and father.
Chloe
McLeod stuns as Alison’s first lover, Joan. Marco Robinson’s portrayal of Roy
makes one hope he will be seen much more often upon the Colorado stage.
Mitch
Samu’s music direction is outstanding. The strings for his stage-flanking
orchestra, aided in no small part by the sensitive drumming of Tag Worley, make
Samu’s music direction one of the very best so far this season.
The minimal
set is another winner by Jonathan Scott-McKean. Vance McKenzie’s lighting
design succeeds wondrously.
Because of
the adult themes and strong language the production team recommends it for
audiences who are 14 years of age and older. Marlowe's Musings
