In 1981 Ernest Thompson
adapted his play, “On Golden Pond” for the screen. Katherine Hepburn received
the Oscar for Best Actress. Henry Fonda
got the Oscar for Best Actor.
In a
nutshell “On Golden Pond” gives us Norman and Ethel Thayer’s 49th
summer vacation at their cottage on the lake. The couple is still dealing with
all the issues that arise with having a family as they take on all the vicissitudes
of growing older.
Making the role her own, Denver favorite Jan
Cleveland is luminous as Ethel. Ken Street lends a reality to hilariously
cranky Norman that makes us wish he were onstage much more often.
Their daughter, Chelsea, who’s
still working through childhood issues with daddy, is portrayed skillfully by
Molly Killoran.
Luke
Rahmsdorff-Terry adds great good humor and lots of laughter to the role of
Charlie, Chelsea’s childhood sweetheart.
Benji Dienstfrey’s animated
portrayal of Chelsea’s fiance’s son, brings up memories of his celebrated work
as Billy’s cross-dressing friend, Michael, In Vintage Theatre’s critically acclaimed
production of “Billy Elliott.”
Andy Anderson, whose awesome
work as Billy’s father in that same production, endears in the thankless role
of Bill Ray,Chelsea’s fiancĂ©.
Directed by the tirelessly
creative,Bernie Cardell, it’s no wonder this evening of theatre is so enjoyable!
